For the price it is good value given its proximity to Cognac - but for some this may be a drawback as its outlook is marred by a number of industrial buildings. If was anywhere else it would be twice the price. Located on the outskirts of Cognac. Cognac is an attractive medieval town famous for its high quality brandy. It is situated in the second sunniest region in France, on the banks of the River Charente and is made up of narrow cobbled streets and elegant Renaissance facades with numerous shops and cafes. Guided tours of the distilleries are possible, in barges and small trains, boat rides, fishing, canoeing and kayaking are available on the river and there are numerous festivals throughout the year (including the Grande Champagne exhibition). The Ancien Chateau (former home of King Francois I) is also a beautiful sight to see. La Rochelle airport (with low cost airlines to London, Bristol and Ireland) can be reached in 70mins.
