Limousin - Creuse - Saint Vaury AREA
Situated in an elevated position with 360° views over the Creuse countryside is this magnificent twelfth century château set in 3.7 hectares of parkland. Dating from circa 1174 this is one of the oldest medieval castles in the Limousin with history dating back to the Knights Templar, and was originally built as a hilltop defence castle with walled battlements. The South turret of the tower is carved with the Fleur de Lis in honor of the French members of the Royal family that resided at the castle over the centuries.
The approach to the château is a long tree lined avenue planted in commemoration of the coronation of King Louis Xiv. The château was built in two periods with the oldest section constructed over an enormous vaulted cellar with the castle kitchen, and the beautiful original granite staircase running throughout forming the centrepiece of the château.
The current owners have carried out substantial restoration work to the interior of the château over the past few years, there are remaining rooms to be completed.
The main entrance to the chateau is from the west terrace and on the ground floor there are four very large reception rooms with fireplaces and many further original features, a room with fireplace in the tower, and a separate 17th century spiral staircase which was used by the servants.
On the first floor there are currently eight bedrooms with bathrooms, although the rooms on this floor have been created with relatively recent partitions to provide maximum sleeping space when the château was previously run commercially, there is capacity for the floor to be remodeled if required.
On the second floor is a fully renovated self-contained 3 bedroom apartment with living/dining room, kitchen and bathroom, and there are 3 further bedrooms which require finishing.
The château is set high on a hill with secluded beautiful grounds of just over 3.7 hectares. Situated on the château's parkland is a detached fully renovated house, which is currently being run as a business Gite sleeping 5 persons and is registered with Gites de France.
The old chapel behind the château is still standing but only the original gable end remains and the other walls have been rebuilt.
Set within the grounds there is also a detached 13 bedroom coach house on three levels which needs complete modernising internally, large indoor menage, barn and stables.
